Creating a Device
FlexNet Operations 2014
You can define hardware devices (FlexNet Embedded devices) in FlexNet Operations.
Each device is identified by a Device ID (typically a serial number) and its host type. You can define a set of hardware devices for which licenses can be generated, as well as generate pre-built licenses for the device. Entitlements can be linked to devices.
A device’s host type is defined when a license technology is configured. (Devices always use FlexNet licensing technology; devices are not supported with custom license technologies.) A host type can include additional custom attributes to describe or classify it. See Creating a License Technology for brief instructions about creating a host type.
To create a device
1.
On the Manage Devices page, click Add, then select Add Device (or Add Test Device). (A test device is identical to a regular device, but may only be associated with test entitlements.) |
2.
On the Create a Device page, under Device ID, enter a unique identifier for the new device. The Device ID is typically the device’s serial number. |
3.
Select a host type from the Type drop-down list. When you choose a host type, FlexNet Operations shows the ID Type selector and controls for custom attributes (if any). |
4.
If the host type includes any custom attributes, enter values for these. |
5.
Select a host ID type from the ID Type drop-down list, and click Submit. (For a list of supported FNE host ID types, see the FlexNet Operations release notes.) In addition to the Publisher Identity and Description controls, FlexNet Operations reveals the lists and controls for End Customer and Channel Partners, Pre-Built License, and Add-Ons. |
6.
Select a publisher identity for the device from the Publisher Identity drop-down list, which defines the device’s security level. (Note: the publisher identity specified here needs to match the identity loaded into the actual device; otherwise, activation requests will not be honored.) |
7.
If desired, in Description, enter an optional description of the device. |
Note: Adding unknown devices (devices not already defined within FlexNet Operations) requires the administrative console is configured to allow adding unknown devices. In addition, there must be a method for setting the host type for the device:
•
To automatically set the host type, either identify an implementation of the device handler interface to populate device settings (for example, setting the host type by device ID) or configure the device to send host type information in its capability request using the FlxPublisherSetDeviceType function. |
•
To permit users to set the host type manually, configure FlexNet Operations to display host types and/or supply default host types for devices. (See Configuring Embedded Devices Settings for additional information on these settings.) |
